The Needle Mountains are a subrange of the San Juan Mountains of the Rocky Mountains positioned in the southwestern part of the U.S. State of Colorado. Much of the range is safe within the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. The range is notable for having one of the vital most rugged mountains within the state, and contains many technical climbs and scrambles. A small however dramatic east-west subrange within the northern section is referred to as the Grenadier Range.

Geology

Unlike the remainder of the San Juan Mountains, which might be volcanic in starting place, the Needle Mountains (along side the Grenadier Range) are a mass of uplifted Precambrian rocks. They consist mainly of quartzite, granite, and amphibolite. The mountains are known as the Needle Mountains Uplift.[2][3]
